Bone Summary

Relatively small quantities of bone were recovered from T90 in 2018. Only 190 fragments of bone were found in 2018; this is in contrast to excavations in T90 in 2017, when we recovered 313 fragments of bone. This discrepancy likely results from the differing nature of the deposits of excavated in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, many loci postdated the occupation of EPOC4 and were associated with the superimposed small rectilinear building built over EPOC4’s porch; these loci yielded the highest quantities of bone in 2017. Similarly, in 2018, the highest quantities of bone were found in deposits associated with the small rectilinear building. These deposits, which include Loci 16, 17, and 18, yielded 46% of all bone found in T90 in 2018. Most of the remaining bone came from Loci 12, 14, 19, and 20, which are associated with Beaten Earth Surface 2, or EPOC4’s floor surface.

No definite examples of worked or butchered bone were found in T90 in 2018.

Throughout the course of the 2018 field season, we special found 29 examples of diagnostic bone recovered from the trench. We are awaiting analysis from Sarah Kansa, our zooarchaeologist.
