Daily Log

July 14, 1998 AM

Morning was spent leveling the floor of locus 10 in CA42N in order to define the boundaries of the lensing within yellow sterile soil, within which the stone formation is located.  The lensing conatins olive brown soil (2.5Y 4/3) with numerous carbon inclusions and abundant archeological material.  The sterile soil is at olive to pale olive color (5Y 6/3-5/3) with white calcium inclusions.  locus 10 produced approximately 30 tile pieces, 5 pieces of plaster and full latte box of bone and pottery.  Also a fragment of bronze fibula pin was found.

Finished leveling the surface of locus 10 to approximately 110-120 cm b.d., at which point a drawing of the "feature" (olive brown soil containing stone formation) was done and photos taken.  The division between different soil types is clearly discernible and they will be given separate locus designation tomorrow.

In the afternoon locus 10 produced 19 bone fragments, 17 tile, 2 plaster, 5 coarseware, 2 orangeware, 17 impasto and 4 bucchero fragments.  A large fragment of coarseware base was found embedded vertically into the soil 1m north of stone formation.

East baulk of meters N12-15 W10 was cleaned.  Several pottery fragments were found.
