Daily Log

July 24, 1979

The area defined by the east wall of the agger, the southern crosswall, the wall running parallel to the agger in the 0 grid, and the north wall in the A grid is now designated Rectangle 22.  A new grid system for the rectangle has been established: alphabetically the grids run eastward from the east wall of the agger, numerically they run to the south from the outer edge of the north wall.

A cut 50 cm deep, as determined by the preserved surface of the east wall of the rectangle, was begun in A-E/2-3.  Very little pottery was recovered, however the sherds which were found are from generally finer ware.  Two frieze plaque frags were recovered; however, the exceptional find for hte day is a small bronze bird, perhaps a top lid handle to a bronze vessel.

Work continued as well in the Agger 11 extension.  Grids AA, BB/1-4 were excavated - the purpose being to expose the north flank of the onrth wall of rectangle and determine how it may bond with the east wall of the agger.
