AM

This morning work begins by leveling the floor of the trench in Locus 3 in preparation for declaring a new locus. Soil is removed using hand picks and trowels, then sorted by hand over buckets. Some terra cotta, pottery, and a few fragments of bone have been so far found. Soil is consistent in color, texture, and material throughout the trench, a medium olive brown and sand-like, except for the northwestern corner, which is a dark olive brown, soft, loose, and sandy with extremely small vegetation inclusions. Baulk trimming is also done.

Because the soil has consistently changed into a medium olive brown with sandy texture and few stone inclusions, mostly palm-sized, and more pottery has been recovered than terra cotta so far, Locus 3 has been closed and Locus 6 opened

around it. At the same time, the northwestern corner continues to yield a distinct dark olive brown soil, sandy and very loose, and so that area has been sectioned off with trench lined and declared Locus 7 . Photographs and opening elevations were taken.

Locus 6 Opening Elevations:

- NE corner: 23.96 mAE

- (72 S, 54.55 E): 23.70 mAE

- (72.26 S, 54 E): 23.75 mAE

- (72 S, 54 E): 23.73 mAE / NW corner

- SW corner: 23.64 mAE

- SW corner: 23.65 mAE

Locus 7 Opening Elevations:

- (72 S, 54.55 E): 23.70 mAE

- NW corner (72 S, 54 E): 23.73 mAE

- (72.43 S, 54.54 E): 23.71 mAE

- (72.47 S, 54.19 E): 23.72 mAE

- (72.50 S, 54.37 E): 23.74 mAE

- (72.41 S, 54.46 E): 23.70 mAE

- (72.26 S, 54 E): 23.75 mAE

- (72.18 S, 54 E): 23.71 mAE

- (72 S, 54.55 E): 23.70 mAE

A pick pass was conducted in Locus 6 starting in the western half going east. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets to be dumped into a wheelbarrow. While sorting, a small flake of bronze (Special Find #1) was found.

Special Find #1:

- Locus 6

- 54.44 E/73.00 S

- 23.62 mAE

Another pick pass was conducted in the eastern half of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. Material finds so far include terra cotta ranging from fingernail to palm-sized, and pottery, but no bone. Soil is a sandy, compacted darkish olive brown with little stone inclusions. Roots from the stump near the southeastern meter are appearing.

A pick pass was conducted in the central extent of the trench. Soil color and fabric remain consistent. Soil content remains relatively consistent, with a high amount of pottery, as well as terracotta and bone. No mottling has occurred in the trench.

A second pick pass was conducted in the eastern half of the trench. Soil color is becoming more

mottled, with white and black inclusions appearing in the central-eastern region. Pottery and tile are still being recovered in higher degrees, as well as stone. The quality of terracotta and pottery has also improved, with more sherds being diagnostic in nature.

For the rest of the afternoon, (barring taking points), the trench was cleaned, and baulk walls were trimmed.

Loci 5 and 7 were not worked in today.
