CA24 Stratum A
Work began on the removal of the orange plaster "pavement" running along the eastern edge of CA24 in grid squares B9-B19 (see plan page 263 , and text pages 58 -129 passim) This area consisted of a stratum of orangish plaster ca. 20 cm. thick mixed with brown earth, small stones, bits of pottery and tiles. A small number of animal bones were also contained in this stratum as well as misfired pottery and iron slag (?).
Below this stratum and connected with it by interrelated finds was a layer of charcoal bearing earth, burned and blackened, which produced the same sorts of finds as the orange layer above. Therefore, they are considered together here and together are designated as CA24 (stratum a).
Finds from the day'sexcavation included:
- Find #1
- B10(A)
-
spindle whorl
- Find #2
- B13(A)
-
spindle whorl
- Find #7
- B13(A)
- bronze lump
One box of pottery from the area B9-B12(A) was sent down and four boxes of tiles dumped form the area.
In grid square B14, below the level of the "pavement" was a pocket of burned and blackened earth corresponding to that mentioned on page 81 . This area produced burned and blackened pottery, bones, tiles, misfires and slag.
