Took overhead pictures of 1st trench with jameson's bipod.  Began removing Locus 4 pottery and stone pile down to Locus 3 level.  Pan tiles, ridgepole tiles, pottery and the special finds below came out fo the small SW corner (Locus 4).  Terracotta, pottery and stones are still visible in the floor of the trench below Locus 4.  The trench floor is now flat across the 2m x 2m pit, and the soil is a compact uniform yellow/brown.  The remaining fragments will be left in situ to compare with any continuation of the pile of stuff found in the new trench to the SW.  The floor is 31/37cm b.s., with the shallow part in the SW corner over the remaining artifacts.

Locus 4: Terracotta: 1/5 cassette

Pottery and Bone: 1/3 latte box

The pottery is mainly small fragments of black impasto.

Started pick-axing and removing root layer (Locus 1) of new trench.  Soil is typical most dark brown with lots of white root fungus.  Took 10-15cm cut, still in roots.  There are a number of voids in the soil from decayed dree stumps which extend quite deep, approximately 30cm.

Terracotta: 1/10 cassette

Pottery: 10 pieces

5 of the pottery pieces are thin orangeware (?) types which were uncommon

in the first trench.
