STRATEGY: 1. To remove the last of the backfill from the sounding and surrounding areas. 2. To remove an arbitrary 3cm spit from the NW corner of Op. I - an area of approx. 350cm x 450cm. The northern half of this area has a high pottery content and may reveal a surface.

SUMMARY: 1. The last of the backfill was removed from around the sounding. The sounding itself was left covered in plastic - it will be excavated later in the season. The pit on the west edge of the souding was prepared for excavation later. 2. Excavation of the NW corner of Op.1 was incomplete at the end of the day - the remainder will be removed tomorrow. The material removed was given lot no.1220. It appears to be a relatively secure deposit though some minimal backfill contamination is possible. 1220 is brown, friable deposit. A 50cm baulk was established north of the sounding.
