AM

Triangulated coordinates for trench and set lines for the baulk walls. Cleared and swept trenches in preparation for opening photographs. Took opening photographs.

Made a pickpass of the northern half of the trench. Came across larger (25-30 cm) stones in the middle of the trench. Locus 1 is designated as the topsoil/humus layer characterized by roots, dark brown soil, and small stones (3-10 cm). This locus also yeilds a significant amounts of badly worn terracotta. All terracotta will be

recorded in the afternoon. While cleaning up the northern half pick pass a different soil was appearing which was lighter in color, more claylike and less organic.

Clipped roots and finished cleaning the northern half. Made a pick pass of the southern half and turned up the same soil change noted in the AM. Towards the southeast corner to middle of the trench several large (25-30 cm) rocks were discovered. Troweled around the rocks to define them. Several small stumps were also removed throughout the trench. An organic, yellowish soil, or root rot, was discovered in the SW corner and continued along the southern baulk wall and extends 3-4 cm down.

Cleaned the rest of the trench in preparation of declaring a new locus tomorrow.
