It was decided that Locus 15 , which was excavated yesterday, is truly galestra; only 1 pottery sherd and 1 bone fragment were recovered from this locus, and that was during the first pick pass, along the southern baulk.  The remaining pick passes were completely sterile.  Thus it was decided to close Locus 15 .  Closing photos and elevations were taken.

Closing Elevations: Locus 15

  • NW corner (53S/195.13E): 25.54m A.E.
  • NE corner (53S/196E): 25.57m A.E.
  • SE corner (55S/196.02E): 25.43m A.E.
  • SW corner (55S/194E): 25.54m A.E.
  • 53.77S/194E: 25.63m A.E.
  • 53.68S/195.15E: 25.40m A.E.

It was then decided to remove the white, plaster-like feature uncovered yesterday (which now seems to be some sort of burnt stone) and to excavate this previously unexcavated area.  This will be designated Locus 16 .  Opening photos and elevations were taken.

Opening Elevations: Locus 16

  • NW corner (53.04S/194E): 25.82m A.E.
  • NE corner (53.10S/195.13E): 25.69m A.E.
  • SE corner (53.68S/195.15E): 25.53m A.E.
  • SW corner (53.77S/194E): 25.62m A.E.

Locus 16 is an olive-green, claylike soil containing some terracotta, carbon, and limestone inclusions.  The soil is identical to that of Locus 14 , and like Locus 14 , Locus 16 contains little material.  It was decided to trowel Locus 16 down to the galestra surface underlying it ( Locus 15 ), which was uncovered beneath Locus 14 yesterday.  Also, the white feature was removed in order to be brought down to the magazino (Find #1).

Once the remaining olive-green soil was removed, as well as the white feature, Locus 16 was declared closed.  Closing photos and elevations were taken.

Locus 16 : Closing Elevations

  • NW corner (53.04S/194E): 25.75m A.E.
  • NE corner (53.10S/195.13E): 25.69m A.E.
  • SE corner (53.68S/195.15E): 25.40m A.E.
  • SW corner (53.77S/194E): 25.63m A.E.

Once Locus 16 was closed, baulk walls were trimmed in preparation for the stratigraphic section drawings of the south and west baulk walls and the closing of the trench.  While trimming the baulks, a piece of Italo-Corinthian pottery (Find #2) and a ridged bucchero stem (Find #3) were recovered from what would have been Locus 13 .
