T26 Conclusion

T26 was reopened in the 2024 excavation season with the following goals:

  • To explore the surface revealed within the depression and beneath the tile fall removed in 2023
  • To investigate the extent of the depression to the north of the floor surface revealed in 2019
  • To determine the extent of the tile fall to the north of OC 2
  • To uncover details that will clarify the chronology of the OC structures in relation to the EPOC structures
  • To understand the stratigraphy between T98 and T100
  • To determine the nature and function of the small auxiliary stones of OC 2

Some of these goals were met during the 2023 season. Excavation during the 2024 season focused on revealing the roof collapse of the OC2/Workshop structure. The tile fall found in 2022 and removed in 2023 (T26 2023, Locus 24) was found to continue throughout the extent of the 2024 trench in the area north (Locus 41) of the OC2/Workshop floor surface (Locus 39).

The tile fall was unexcavated due to time constraints. Further investigation and removal of the tile fall is necessary to determine the extent of the depression to the north of the OC2/Workshop (T103; T26 2023, Locus 24). Beneath the tile fall, a dark brown surface with inclusions of small stones was revealed, which may represent a continuation of the surface found beneath Locus 24 in 2023. Further excavation is needed to clarify this surface and the possible use of small stones as floor construction preparation or cobbling. The two carbon deposits found in Locus 41 may be related to the large carbon deposits found and removed in 2023 (Loci 30 and 37). The full extent of these deposits lie beneath the tiles of Locus 41 and were not fully revealed.

T26 in 2024 confirmed the findings of T26 2023. Further excavation is needed to fully reveal the Orientalizing surface level associated with the occupation of OC2/Workshop to determine the topography north of the building between T26 and T103.
