Work began by finishing the pick pass begun yesterday afternoon; we picked in the southern meters of the trench. Soil continued to be dark brown and claylike, with white limestone inclusions. Soil is shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. A fairly high quantity of tile and pottery was recovered. Additionally, a gorgon fragment (Find #1) was found while sorting over the wheelbarrow.
We made a pick pass of the entire trench, beginning in the north and working south. Four large rocks are visible in the NE corner of the trench, and so we avoided this area and picked lightly in the northern meters of the trench. No large rocks were felt while picking in the north of the trench, but soil appears to be getting lighter and more yellow. However, the picked soil was still dark brown. Soil continued to be shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. There is noticeably less tile in this pick pass than in previous days but there are still relatively high quantities of pottery.
A second full pick pass was made of the trench, once again beginning in the north and moving south. Soil continued to be dark brown and claylike, with white limestone inclusions.. An additionally large stone was felt while picking in the northern meters of the trench, near the NW corner, but o far this is the only large rock felt in this area. Soil continued to be shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. Fairly high quantities of tile and pottery were recovered, although there was less tile than in previous days. While picking in the north, a cooking stand fragment (Find #2) was found, along with an iron fragment (Find #3) that was found in the wheelbarrow. Additionally, while picking in the southern meters of the trench, a line of rocks parallel to the northern wall of the new building began to appear 1.5m to the SW of the projecting N wall. This may be an internal division. Closing elevations for the day were taken as work ended for the long weekend.
