Work began with a pick pass of the southern half of the trench, in the area that was not picked yesterday. Soil is dark brown and claylike with white limestone inclusion. There are smaller roots and many small rocks in this soil, which is typical of topsoil. This indicated that we are likely excavating what was topsoil at the time that earlier excavators created the dirt dump. Soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. Fairly high quantities of tile and pottery were recovered, including some large tile fragments. During this half pick pass, a sima cavetto fragment (Find #1) was found).
A second pick pass was made of the entire trench, beginning in the north and moving south. Soil continues to be darker brown and claylike, with white inclusions and small rocks and roots. Soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. Fairly high quantities of tile and pottery, but little bone, was found including a frieze
plaque fragment with a preserved guilloche (Find #2), an iron nail that was found in the wheelbarrow (Find #3), and a fragment of horse race frieze plaque (Find #4).
A third pick pass was made, once again moving from north to south. Soil continues to be dark brown and claylike, with white limestone inclusions. There are also many small roots and rocks present, especially in the northern meters of the trench. Soil is shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. Fairly large quantities of tile and pottery, but little bone, were recovered. Additionally, a modern terracotta tile fragment was found, indicating that this is not a contextually secure locus. The mixed materials, coupled with the many small rocks and small roots contained in the soil, indicate that we are excavating through topsoil underlying the old dirt dump.

Work continued by completing the pick pass begun in the morning by picking the southernmost meters of the trench. Soil continues to be dark brown and claylike, with white inclusions and small rocks. Large quantities of tile and pottery were recovered, but little bone was found. Soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow while sorting
soil from the western meters of the trench, a piece of medieval pottery (Find #5) was found, further indicating that we are not yet in a contextually secure context.
Another pick pass was made of the trench, beginning in the north and working south. While picking, larger rocks were felt near the northern baulk wall of the trench. These may be part of the wall extending from T-57 to T-74, 77, and 79. Therefore, greater care will be taken in the northern meters of the trench in the future. Soil continued to be shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. High quantities of tile and pottery were found, but little bone was recovered in the NW corner of the trench, a frieze plaque fragment (Find #6) was found.
The day's fifth pick pass was begun in the northern meters of the trench and working south. Soil continues to be dark brown, claylike, and with white inclusions. Larger rocks were felt once again in the northernmost meters of the trench, near the NE corner. Soil continued to be shoveled into buckets and
sorted over the wheelbarrow. Large quantities of tile and pottery were found, along with another fragment of modern tile, indicating that this locus is not contextually secure. After we picked in the northernmost meters of the trench, the area immediately south of the northern baulk, was scraped down with trowels, in order to determine if only large rocks that may be part of the wall are visible. After scraping down, four large rocks were felt in the eastern meters of the trench. While picking the central meters of the trench, an iron tack (Find #7) was found while sorting soil over the wheelbarrow. Closing elevations for the day were taken.
