Daily Log

Monday, June 24

Continued taking down meters N27-28, E45-46 to the depths recorded below (approx 25-30cm below the surface).  Soil is medium brown -very uniformly fine tecture with little inclussions.  <unreadable> material minimal and mostly all from N28, E45.  Soil is also darker in this NW 1/4 of N28,E45.  1 doz pieces of terracotta and about 1/2 doz frag pottery.

Another series of cuts taken in N27-28, E45-46 to 50-55cm beow datum.  Absolutely no cultural material recovered in these latest cuts. E45 and E46 diverge in soil color in N27.  E46 maintained a darker grey hue while E45 went directly to a light yellow sterile soil.  No cultural material recorded to account for this soil difference, hence not recorded as a feature.  Cut not complered in N1/2 of N28;to be finished in PM.

PM

Cut to 50-55cm b.d. completed with no occurance of cultural material.

Fresh excavation of topsoil begun in N29,E45.  We are looking into this meter despite the mostly sterile soil of N27-28, E45-46 because what material was found came from the northern 1/2 of N28,E45.  Initial cut into the topsoil confirms the appearance of material here, including some burnt(?) bone.  Topsoil cut not complete.
