The area in S 28-29, E 138 was lowered to 80 cm b.d. to further define the stone concentration to the immediate north.  The work, in LOCUS 2, produced 5 bits of terracotta, 6 fragments of pottery and 1 bone.

The regularity of these stones in S 27-28 E 137-138, as well as the apparent coursing, as least two courses are visible, indicate that they form a wall.  This is in line with the southern orientalizing foundation, although it is preserved to a greater height- there is approx. 60 cm difference in the preserved elevations.  It should also be noted here that the northern orientalizing well is preseved to a greater height then the section of the south wall in S 27-28 E 136-137; approximately 30 cm higher.

It was decided to remove the 50 cm baulk in the south portion of S 26 in order to recover, perhaps, more of the decorated bucchero which was spread more heavily in the north half of S 26.  In addition, it may be possible to pick up traces of a foundation trench.  This baulk will be removed in meter wide sections, starting with E 138.

A.M. (cont.)

The section of baulk in S26 E 138 was partially removed to a depth of 65 cm b.d.  The upper layer, LOCUS 18, was a medium brown soil with a large number of roots including portions of a small tree stump.  At a depth of approximately 55-60 cm infrequent flecks of carbon began to appear and so a new locus was begun- 19.

LOCUS 18 produced 7 fragments of pottery, 1 bone fragment, and 19 fragments of heavily worn terracotta.

LOCUS 19 produced 14 fragments of pottery, 4 fragments of bone and 3 pieces of terracotta, in addition to a bucchero rim (#1)
