Daily Log

A.M.

We began by clearing down the east side of locus 1, finishing this locus.  This was done very quickly, and I closed out locus 1.  Closing depths for locus 1 are as follows:

Meter Depth

E167/S58.5                                   27.78

E168.5/S58.5                                27.83

E170/S58.5                                   27.87

E167/S60.5                                   27.77

E168.5/S60.5                                27.81

E170/S60.5                                   27.81

Material Yield from locus 1: Open 7/9/03-7/10/03

1  Cassetta terracotta

2  Small worn sherds of coarseware

No  Special finds

Soil was medium-dark brown topsoil with many roots due to nearby tree stumps.  The large stump is still present on the east half of the trench and takes up much of meters E169/S58.5-59.5.  Some smaller stumps were removed.

We immediately opened locus 2, which is defined simply as the soil directly beneath the first cut of topsoil.  We took a cut of 5-10 cm. into locus 2 to start.

The soil is light to medium brown with many roots due to so many large stumps.  There are few but not many stones in the soil.

We removed the three medium sized stumps on the west end of the trench.  The soil in and around them was contianed within locus 2, and had no material finds.  We attempted to undermine the very large stump.  Ended the morning by trimming baulk walls on the west side of the trench.

P.M.

We continued trimming baulk walls in the afternoon, and attempted to undermine the large stump.  Then we took a second cut into locus 2.  The soil was cleared and sifted with trowels in the trench.  The west half of the trench was taken to this level by the end of the afternoon.

The trench was swept down at the end of the day and the roots were trimmed.  End of day elevations were taken as follows:
