Daily Log 23/07/2009

AM

Began the morning by doing a shallow pick pass in the middle of the tench to determine the border of the new soil. The grey continues to appear throughout the trench but the extent of its deposition is difficult to determine. As such, we are declaring a new locus in the western half of the trench in the high ground. In this area we do not know how the grey soil relates to the grey soil in the deeper parts of the trench. Our intent is to excavate the higher grey soil first as a separate locus and then determine how it relates to the grey soil elsewhere.

Opening Coordinates for Locus 11 :

E- 21.88 mAE

Locus 11 is a flakey soil that crumbles easily. It is a pale grey that also can appear to have shades of blue in it. Locus 11 has pockets of yellow soil within it. there is an extremely small amount of material found within, only a few pieces of pottery and a couple fragments if bone in the first pick pass. These finds may be due to bioturbation considering the overall galestra like appearance of the locus. However, this is unclear pending further pick passes. During the first pick pass in locus 11 , a piece of pottery rim with a decorative incision was found. Considering the

overall lack of material within the locus, it is special find #1 for the day.

Three more pick passes were done of locus 11 . In the south western area of the trench a patch of carbon included soil, it is a grey brown but has yet to yield an material. Also, in locus 11 there is a large amount of quartz stones.

PM

Work continues in Locus 10 . the soil has been picked and then scraped. A Yellow Brown soil is beginning to appear in the Eastern part of the locus. The locus is being leveled and the baulks trimmed to further define the new soil. 2 pick passes were done in locus 11 more material is being exposed, although it remains only in very small amounts.

Another 2 pick passes completed in Locus 11 . No material was recovered from these passes. The grey soil is still present through out most of the locus. The area around the carbon soil patch was scraped to further define it. Locus 10 was scraped to level, several roots were removed from around the stump. The baulks were then trimmed through the whole trench.
