Daily Log

June 23, 1967

Work continued in trench 2A.  With workmen switched, work proceeded faster in the east trench.  The stones in the north end were cleaned and polished, and the south end was taken down to a depth of 1.75 m.

In the east trench, a (anatomical?) fragment was found ata depth of 1.0 m., and a fragment of cornice at a depth of 1.30 m., both in the south end.

In the south end of the west trench a small section of cavetto molding from a lateral sima was found at a depth of 1.40 m., and a section of procession frieze, showing the seated figures and

the umbrella, very well preserved, was found at a depth of 1.50 m., 1.35 m. from the west wall, and .47 m. from the south wall (find #5).

A section of horse-race frieze, fairly well preserved, (showing the back of the second horse and the front of the third) was found in the east trench at a dpeth of 1.40 m., at the west side, .95 m. form the south wall (find # 6).

Pieces of an impasto bowl, including the base and most of one side, were found in the west trench, at a depth of 1.60- m., at the eats edge of the trench, 1.40 m, from the south wall (find # 7).

The mouth and neck of an impasto jug was found in the east trench, at a depth of 1.60 m, .40 m. from the south end, and 1.40 m. from the east side (find #8).  CLose to this, and a little deeper, a small terracotta human head (similar to 66-119) was found, in good condition, at a depth of 1.60 m., .30 m. from the south end, and 1.75 m. from the east side (find #9).  Both of these objects were photographed in situ.

Several fragments of impasto pottery were found in the south end of the west trench, at a depth of 1.50 m. A section of campstool frieze was found in the west trench at a depth of 1.46 m., at the east side, and .40 m. from the south end (find #10).
