Locus Summary for T22 West Ext

A total of 9 loci were identified in T22 West ext for season 2000 . This trench lies apprx 2 meters south of the original T22 west ext trench last excavated in 1993. Throughout the season, the baulk wall of the original T22 west ext trench was cleaned in hopes of gaining a better understanding of the stratigraphy of the area. It was expected that the stratigraphy of the original T22 West Ext trench would be similar to what wuld be encountered in the 2000 season, but there were some deviations.

Locus 1 which was the topsoil cut produced fairly littel material. Locus 2 was richer in ceramic types but many of the sherds were quite worn and fragmentary. Locus 3 became very sandy in texture and produced a great # of pottery finds that are characteristically

archaic in date such as a frieze plaque fragment and other architectural terracottas. In the lower level of locus 3, a tile concentration was uncovered. which was about 1-2 tiles thich producing about 2 cassetti of terracotta. Locus 4 was located directly beneath this tile spread. This locus was fairly small and produced little pottery. Locus 5 represents the upper portion of the "plaster" layer which is thick with disintegrated plaster. The ceranics increased as well as other finds. Locus 6 equates with Locus 5. Both Locus 6 and 5 probably date to the orientalising period due to the cut out akroterion fragment found and ceramic types. The only difference between the two loci was the amount of plaster found within each. Locus 7 has a darker soil with an increased amount of carbon and less plaster. This locus may be indicative of the orientalising "burn" layer. Locus 7 produced the greatest amount of pottery and bone. Locus 8

rested directly beneath a second tile concentration. This layer was a much thicker "plaster" layer than originally found in locus 5 & 6. The small portion od locus 8 excavated yielded a large amount of pottery and bone as well as plaster and tile. Directly below locus 8, a layer of galestra was uncovered which became locus 9. This locus became sterile after a few cm into it.
