AM
This morning work began with clearing the area where the T-101 extension will be placed as well as the area surrounding it. Points were triangulated around the original T-101 (KD VII) trench from 2022 in order to establish points for the 2023 extension. A 2x2 meter extension will be excavated to the south along the innermost two meters of the southern edge of T-101 (KD VII). While the extension will be set up as a 2x2m extension, the southernmost meter of the extension will remain unexcavated due to the presence of a tree in the extension and will be excavated when deemed necessary. A portion of T-101 (KD VII) from 2022 will be excavated to the north of the extension to connect the extension to the arbitrary baulk wall from 2022. Photos were taken facing south and east of the entirety of T-101 to show the relationship between the original T-101 (KD VII) from 2022 and the extension. Opening photos were then taken of Locus 8 also facing south and east .
PM
After lunch, the top of Locus 8 was drawn on millimeter paper and in the trench book to show the top of the topsoil layer before excavation can begin. Opening elevations were then taken and were as follows:
NW: 28.48 mAE
NE: 28.48 mAE
SE: 28.43 mAE
SW: 28.46 mAE
Handpicks were then used in the northernmost meter of the extension to remove the topsoil layer in accordance with methodology in T-101 (KD VII) from 2022. Abraded fragments of terracotta and sparse fragments of coarseware were found while hand sifting. There are a significant number of large roots in the northwest and northeast corners of the extension due to the presence of a tree to the east of the extension and a stump in the northwestern corner. The soil is a dark grey brown silty loam mixed with yellow brown pockets of dense and compact silty clay loam from the humus layer of the topsoil. Small to medium size rocks are occurring throughout the extension with a significant number concentrated in the northwest and northeast corners near the large roots. Abraded fragments of terracotta continue to be found throughout the extension. At the end of the day closing elevations were taken.
