Daily Log

July 8, 2003

The second session opened in much the same way as the first closed.  We began the day with measurements and then picked the entire area of Locus 6 . Locus 5 was excavated as before by trowel since there is not enough room to pick without disturbing the rocks - the distinguishing feature of the locus.

Articulating the rocks of Locus 5 has proved difficult because from the south face, they are not all adjacent.  Some of the rocks, especially some of the smaller ones, are indeed floating, but this is by no means certain for all of them.

A large almost hemispherical piece of terra cotta was found in the intial picking.  It turned out to be a female face applique from the Archaic building.

Pottery Count:  82 total shersd, 77 from Locus 6 , 5 from Locus 5 . Locus 6 :  2 undiagnostic bucchero, 2 bucchero rim sherds, 4 undiagnostic orange ware, 2 orange ware rims, 1 undiagnostic buccheroid, 5 undiagnostic coarse ware, 4 impasto rim sherds, 56 undiagnostic impasto sherds, and 1 sherd of medieval painted pottery (= Find #2 ). Locus 5 :  4 sherds of undiagnostic impasto and 1 impasto buccheroid sherd.

Also found were a stone sling bullet (= Find #1 ), a bronze bead (= Find #3 ), the female face applique (= Find #4 ), a piece of slag (= Find #5 ), a chunk of plaster (= Find #6 ), 3 pieces of bone, 1 piece of vitrified

terra cotta, and 2 ceramic unknowns.
