Daily Log

Measurements this morning were conducted without a plumb bob, but the results are nonetheless within tolerance.Excavation of Locus 5 continued until it had almost reached the level of Locus 6. We have not detected a soil change in Locus 5 equivalent to that found in the rest of the trench between Locus 4 and Locus 6. This suggests that the change between Locus 4 and Locus 6 may be either too subtle to detect among the rocks of Locus 5 or a little wishful thinking.
Excavation of Locus 6 continues apace by pick and trowel. I believe that I may have become too paranoid about missing artifacts. To date, two major finds were tossed into the bucket of bulk terra cotta, and only discovered later. In trying to encourage students to look carefully at each piece, I may be overcompensating.
At the beginning of the afternoon, we discovered an area of charring at the northern edge of Locus 6. We will work around this for the time being. This has turned out to be a small collection of small pieces of charcoal. Also uncovered by the second pick-pass is a large piece of roof tile. The significance of this lies in its findspot just to the southeast of where another large piece of pan tile (c. 30 cm long) was found yesterday (not recorded; not in itself diagnostic). Careful clearing of the area found no reason to consider this more than coincidence.
Pottery Count: 86 total sherds. Locus 5: 1 sher of undiagnostic impasto. Locus 6: 85 sherds. 4 coarse ware undiagnostic sherds, 1 coarse ware rim, 1 coarse ware handle spring, 5 undiagnostic orange ware, 1 orange ware rim, 2 undiagnostic bucchero, 1 bucchero rim, 3 undiagnostic buccheroid, 6 impasto rims, 3 impasto handles, and 58 undiagnostic impasto.
3 pieces of vitrified terra cotta were also found.
