Daily Log

July 21, 2003

The opening measurements today reflect a change of between 0.05 m and 0.20 m from Friday morning.  We set out today to continue the excellent progress.  My fears about missing artifacts were assuaged early on as we found several pieces of bronze, 2 iron nails, a cavetto fragment and pieces of at least one rocchetto.

The first pick-pass uncovered an area of yellower soil between 83 and 84 S and west of 192.60 E.  We need to work that area to see if it extends.  It may the top fo the white soil layer that has been exposed in T28 N (2002) and T28 S.  Also of note from this morning is that the stump is gone.  We chopped it out and sifted through the lower portion of its pedastal as Locus 6 .  By the end of the morning, we had made a complete deep pick-pass, but cleaning has taken longer because of the prospect of reaching bottom and the discovery of 10 Finds.

We began the afternoon with a less vigorous pick-pass, again because of our proximity to the white soil layer.  Again, we have left the yellow semi-circle alone, as it was slightly lower already.  The rest of the afternoon was devoted to cleaning up.  By the end of the day, we had brushed most of the trench, as well as T28 N (2002), clean.  This revealed the white soil layer through most of T28 N (2003) - that had been Locus 6 , all of the western spur and much of the southern spur.

Dr. Tuck would like us to check the positions of several of today's finds against the height of the surface of white soil.  Especially as regards the cavetto fragment (= Find #2 ), if the object was resting on the surface, we may be able to date the surface!

Pottery Count:  213 total sherds, all from Locus 6 .  18 coarse ware undiagnostic, 3 coarse ware base sherds (2 of which join), 4 coarse ware handle fragments, 12 bucchero undiagnostic sherds, 1 bucchero handle, 3 bucchero rim sherds, 1 bucchero ridged rim sherd, 14 orange ware undiagnostic sherds, 2 orange ware rims, 141 undiagnostic impasto sherds, 2 impasto base fragments, 1 impasto handle sherd, 7 impasto rims, 1 buccheroid base, and 3 buccheroid rim sherds.

Also found were 4 bone pieces including a jaw fragment with 2 teeth in place, 3 lumps of bronze (= Finds #1 , #5 , and #9 ), a ridged bronze file (= Find #7 ), parts of at least one rocchetto (= Finds #3 and #8 ), 2 iron nails (= Finds #6 and #10 ), a fragment of cavetto from a frieze plaque (= Find #2 ), a carbonized seed (= Find #4 ), a piece of plaster with reed impressions (= Find #11 ), and a polyhedral worked stone (= Find #12 ).
