Pick pass done in the western meter strip, 5-7cm deep, avoiding two remaining tree stumps. Soil sorted and cleaned, soil type changing to be more yellow. No material found in western meter. Eastern meter strip picked, soil sorted and cleaned. The north part of the eastern meter (1m wide x 1.5m long) remains Locus 2. The south part of the eastern meter (1m wide x 1.5m long) soil changing to be more yellow and even more claylike with less material like in western meter strip. While cleaning found piece of iron in the new soil type.

Pick pass done in southern meter strip. Soil sorted and cleaned. Soil type also changing to yellower and more claylike as found in western meter strip and southern part of eastern meter strip. Yellow soil also has many white inclusions. In cleaning found ridged pottery sherd. Littler material found otherwise.

Pick pass done in northern meter avoiding the stumps. Soil sorted and cleaned, remains consistent with Locus 2. Pick pass repeated in northern meter area around the stumps to try and discover the yellow soil type. Soil sorted and cleaned. Soil consistent with Locus 2. Pick pass again in northern meter area. Soil sorted and cleaned, type consistent with Locus 2. Little material being found in the north meter. Picking done in area of the stumps and roots to try to remove stumps. Soil sorted and cleaned. Troweling done around roots so can be removed by axing. Soil consistent with Locus 2.

Continued removing dirt around stumps, sorting and cleaning loose soil as necessary. Soil consistent with Locus 2. Pick pass completed in western meter to level trench and see the extent of the yellow soil in this meter. Soil sorted and cleaned. Yellow claylike

soil with white inclusions appears over western meter. Trench cleaned of organic material from axing stump pieces (though no stumps removed) and roots clipped. Covered with plastic.
