Trimmed baulks in E128-131, S11-12 in preparation for photographing S section.  Stratigraphically the southern section within these meters parallel to the S12 line was similar to the N section within E127-130, S14-15 drawn by the architect Tuesday, July 21 (see pg. ).  Baulk trim resulted in 41 pieces of tile, 9 chunks of plaster, 49 fragments of coarseware, 90 impasto, 1 bucchero and 23 bone.  This material was discarded.  A bucchero tondo in several fragments (Find #2) was also recovered in this work.

A new cut was taken in E130-131, S9-10.  Soil remained consistent with descriptions of Locus 39, and also continued to yield heavy conentrations of carbon as well

as small-medium (5-15cm) stones.  A piece of carbon (30-40cm) was noted in the western baulk.  Careful excavation and defining revealed the material to be extremely friable and fragile.  Surrounding the top of the piece were several roof tile fragments with plaster between and beneath them.  A small area of burnt plaster was located near the center of the carbon piece ( see drawing pg. 174 ).  The piece was defined and photographed in situ.  Other work in this locus yielded 32 pieces of tile, 14 chunks of plaster, 1 1/3 latte boxes of cceramic and bone, and a bucchero handle (Find #1).

designated Locus 37.  37-40 pieces of terracotta, 29 chunks of plaster, and 1 latte of ceramic/bone were recovered.  In addition a bucchero handle (Find #3) and a piece of ridged impasto (Find #4).

A new cut was taken through the baulk in E128-130, S13-14.  Soil was characteristic of top-soil; dark grey with roots, small stones and a thin humus layer.  The soil was designated Locus 40.  17 fragments of worn terracotta and 1/2 latte of ceramic/bone were recovered.
