Morning

Work began by continuing the Red layer cut in D-8.  Ivory was found immediately (this was expected, for we began where we left off yesterday afternoon).  The ivory continues to be found at a depth of approximately 70 centimeters.  There is some carbon in the area, but the ivory is almost uniformly surrounded by the reddish soil.  Triangles and rectangles continue to be the common shapes; however, a few other shapes were found today.  Many of the fragments are incised and one fragment is notable because it appears to be part of a carved figure.

As has been the case in this trench, where there is ivory, there is also bronze -- in addition to bronze slag, one nail and a bronze sphere were also excavated today.

This material was all found in D-8.  When D-8 was completed, D-9 was begun.  This meter produced neither a bronze nor an ivory.  D-9 did, however, produce some pottery -- mostly impasto sherds.  Three rochetti were also found in D-9.  Tile was frequent.
