Conclusion

The excavation of VT-3 during the 2206 season has been successful in improving our understanding of the site, but more work still needs to be done.

In VT-3 a stone feature was uncovered which appears to have been used as a retaining wall.  One meter to the south an outcropping of bedrock was uncovered.  The bedrock extends to the northern edge of VT-3 then slopes off sharply into VT-2.  THis slope seems to begin at the southern most extent of the feature which may suggest they were utilized together to prevent the soil to the west from washing down the slope to the east.

There is a very hard packed soil on both sides of the feature.  On top of which a significant amount of terracotta and pottery were found.  That all this seemed to be resting on the same level suggests this was a deliberately constructed feature.

The pottery found at this layer seems to date the layer to the Hellenistic Era of the Etruscan civilization (4th - 2nd century BC).

Beneath this layer was a softer soil which also contained pottery.  The pottery from this layer included buccheroid and a piece of athenian red figure pottery

which suggests an earlier phase of occupation during the Archaic period.

How the features in VT-3 relate to the remains excavated in 1970 is still unclear.  The stone feature does not seem to connect to the south wall of the structure and the hard packed layer appears to be above the functional surface of the standing remains.

On account of this, it is clear that further excavation is necessary to understand the relationship between what was uncovered this season in VT-3 and the remains from the 1970's excavation.
