Daily Log

June 24, 2003

After taking initial measurements, our first task was to remove the last traces of Locus 2 from the eastern and northern edges.  One diagnostic sherd, an impasto rim fragment, was discovered in the process.  When that had been completed, we closed Locus 2 and took its measurements.

At the same time, we continued to lower Locus 3 to find more of the browner, softer soil beneath it (as was first found yesterday, 23 June).

We began to remove Locus 4 by pick and trowel.  The first impression for this new locus was an increase in the presence of terra cotta fragments.  An iron nail was discovered during the first pick-pass of the locus; the date of this artifact is as yet unknown.

We completed the removal of Locus 3 soil and inclusions down to the level of the browner soil of Locus 4 .  This browner soil contains stone inclusions slightly larger than those of Locus 3 , multiple roots, as well as a few tile and pottery fragments.  This combination of Locus 4 -type soil and inclusions north of 81 S is now called Locus 5 , which will be excavated in order to expose any portion of the retaining wall that may extend into our trench.

While counting the fragments we discovered a fragment of a cavetto from a frieze plaque that had been missed earlier ( Find #3 ).  This piece preserves half of a nail hole.  Would it not be nice if it matches the nail found earlier in the day ( Find #2 )?  While working in Locus 5 , a piece of terra cotta was uncovered among the stones.  This was identified in situ as hair from a gorgon head.  We mention it here, though it was left in situ until the stones are excavated further.  It will also require some balk trimming to remove the piece.

Pottery Count:  32 total sherds.  8 undiagnostic orange ware sherds, 1 everted orange ware rim, 1 rolled orange ware rim, 21 undiagnostic impasto fragments, and 1 everted impasto rim (= Find #1 ).

Also found were 2 pieces of bone, an iron nail (= Find #2 ), and a fragment of a cavetto from a frieze plaque (= Find #3 ).
