A.M.

We began the day by locating the coordinates of the trench on the master grid system and by taking opening elevations.  T-36 is located in the southern courtyard of the archaic building at meters S52/E166 to S56/E170.

Opening elevations for day 1 were:

  • A: 96 cm below datum (28.02 m absolute elevation)
  • B: 101 cm b.d. (27.97 m AE)
  • C: 99.5 cm b.d. (27.985 m AE)
  • D: 106 cm b.d. (27.92 m AE)
  • E: 109 cm b.d. (27.89 m AE)

After measurements were taken, the first pick pass was begun, starting in the northwest corner.  Dirt was shoveled into buckets and sorted over a wheelbarrow, so as to aid speed and efficiency.  This soil layer has been designated Locus 1 and is characterized

by a dark brown soil containing an abundance of roots and rocks.  There are currently 9 stumps in the trench, which cause slight discoloration (a lighter, yellow-brown) in the surrounding soil.

The initiall pick pass was completed and a second one begun.  In the remainder of the first pick pass, soil continued to be shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow, but half-way through the second pick-pass soil was shoveled directly into the wheelbarrow and sorted there in order to expedite excavation efforts.  However, work was cut short due to rain and the pick pass was not completed.

It should be noted that a former tile dump lies near the south-west corner of the trench, which may affect tile counts.
