A.M.

During excavation in the NW corner, a new soil type was discovered that is less clay-like than that of locus 4 . This new soil is softer , dark brown, with few inclusions. Using handpicks and trowels, while hand sorting loose soil over buckets, the rest of locus 4 will be lowered to reveal the new soil type. Starting in the west moving east, a small piece of slag was recovered (Special Find #1), shortly after, an unusually large piece of terracotta was recovered (Special Find #2) and close to this point, a full profile impasto pot was also recovered. Full Profile Impasto Pot and Associated Fragments

There is a lot of material still being recovered including large amounts of pottery sherds as well as rims, bases, and handles. There is also a very large amount of terracotta tile being recovered and a very large amount of charcoal bits spread throughout locus 4 . The morning continued using handpicks to bring down the rest of Locus 4 down to the new soil type in preparation to declare a new locus. Handpicks are also being used to define the border and trim the baulk wall between locus 3 and 4 . During cleanup of the central meter, some small bone was recovered as well as an intact loom weight. (Special Find #4) Shortly after, in the eastern section of Locus 4 , a diagnostic bone fragment was found. (Special Find #5) In the area that the large bone was recovered yesterday, associated bone fragments were found.
