Photographs of Locus 1 were taken early in the morning to ensure consistent lighting. The heavy forestation of the surrounding areas necessitated multiple photos from different angles, which will be digitally stitched together. CA91 was opened later in the morning after the plan of the topsoil layer was carefully drawn and recorded. The soil is compacted and dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) with small roots and small rocks. Excavation begins with handpicks in the east to begin peeling back the topsoil layer. While the many roots and rocks make pickaxing more difficult, the pickaxe replaces the handpicks due to the heavy compaction of the surface. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets before disposal. No soil is sieved due to the decontextualized nature of topsoil.

Continued pick passes moving west through CA91 reveal consistent, dark grey-brown soil. Rocks are approximately 2-5 cm. Handpicks are used around the large tree stumps and rock outcroppings to maintain a level surface. Excavation ends with only the remaining 0.5 western-most meter of the trench unexcavated. At the end of the day, closing elevations were taken.
