Daily Log

Monday, 8 July, morning

We bring the previously excavated areas of L-N 87-88 down to floor level, re-exposing the column base in M 88 and begin a new cut moving north from P 88-89, removing the ca. 10-15 cm. of topsoil over the rock and tile concentration.  IN N 87-88 the floor rises toward the north, wehre in M, the north-south gap widens westward in places to the west end of 87.  The soil of the gap consists of a uniform black, carbonized layer.  Pottery is modest in quantitiy (.33 box) and quality, heavy to fine impasto.  This area also yields a half cassetta of tile and a small amount of plaster, a large flake of bronze, and a bit of bone.  The topsoil cut reaches mid O.  The rock packing and tile below the cut are concentrated along the west side, but the topsoil yields almost a cassetta of tile and about a .25 cassetta of plaster (eg. No. 3) but little pottery.  Also some small bronze flakes and bits of bone.  In Q 86 the large stone embedded in the floor at the southwest corner of the column base is lifted.

Tile 1

Plaster 1/8

Pottery . 25 latte

The topsoil cut in 89 reaches grid N, where its depth is ca. 10 cm. from the surface.  At P/Q 89 large rocks and tile fragments are removed to even the wall down to the floor, upon which one large cover tile fragment rested.  About 20 cm. up from the floor and in the packing was found the akroterion fragment No. 3.  Pottery remains sparse, tile and plaster moderate, in the topsoil layer.
