Cut 6

A point of clarification on the strata.  The edges were cut straight and it is apparent that Stratum A does not obtain in grids A12 and that B is rising, below which is a layer o flighter soil, Str. C, over the remaining stones of the wall, here preserving the hump of the wall.

Cuts 3 and 6

In grids A-E 1-2, excavation was begun of the dark soil of stratum CD.  First the area

of B-C 1-2 was excavated in four cuts.  Cut alpha removed crusty red hump of earth in B1.  About 0.06 m of red earth extending outwards about 0.40-0.50 m.  No finds.

Cut beta removed fine burnt black earth, about 0.05-0.10 m.  Extends into B12 and about 0.75 m into Grid C.  Few finds but a few pieces of bucchero cup fragments.

Cut gamma, a gray layer of finely burnt dust of about 0.02 m.  Found in an area 0.10-0.20 m around the above red crusty layer.  One sherd in both beta and gamma.

Cut delta.  Beneath this area is a thick layer of black colored earth which

continually decreases in its burnt condition in grids BC12 and blends into yellow permeable earth.  In this lower level, most of the objects recorded were found.  In B1, a spindle whorl was found.

In the second part of this strip, grids CDE12, the soil was yellow, permeable, and beneath a layer

of sterile dark brown and black soil (Stratum D).  Excavation of this strip was stopped at D.  In grid D2 in C, a pan fragment was excavated.

Cut 8

In grids AC3, a cross section of the covering area of the NS wall was completed.  In C3, resting directly on the stone of the wall in the yellow permeable soil, a bronze fibula was found.

Few other objects were found.  About 5 tile fragments and 1/4 box of pottery.  A

profile was drawn of the cross-section facing east at 2.5 m grid.

Cut 7 (Stratum C)

Excavation continued into Stratum C.  1/2 box of tile frags was recovered.  Also a hard, thick terracotta brick from A 5-6.
