INTRODUCTION

In the beginning of the field season for 1997 we decided to go back to the CA area immediately north and west of CA36 (grid coordinates: N1-N6-W11-W16.)

CA area is located north of the main road leading to Piano del Tesoro. The goal is to further investigate previous discoveries made in 1991 and in 1993 of small features comprised of regular rectangular packings of stones containing archaeological material. This material is made up of ceramics, faunal remains and metal objects.

Description of Techniques and Materials

Gridding System: the gridding system indicates the meter and not the corner of the meter. Designation is cardinal/numeric as extablished in 1991 and in 1993 ( see sketch of grid layout ).

Depths: measured in absolute kms as \x93x\x94 cms below datum (b.d.). The datum is a fixed point established for the trench. In addition, approximate below surface depth will be noted where possible.

Quantities: the established procedure is to quantify amounts of pottery by milk cartons (latte, latti) and by cassetta, cassette.

Provenance: all material designated and located by meter and absolute depth. Sensitive materials are measures more precisely within individual meters by measurements and drawings.

Loci: We will be using a locus system in which each locus will designate different features e.g. soil types, post holes.

Soil types: will be defined visually and more precisely by a munsell chart.
