Introduction

I. Introduction

The purpose of continuing the excavation of the T-30 area is twofold.  The first aim is to determine positively whether a building of the Orientalizing period existed here between the Orientalizing Complex Building 2/Workshop (OC2/Workshop), which lies to the south of this area, and the Orientalizing Complex Building 1/Residence (OC1/Residence) and the Orientalizing Complex Building 3/Tripartite (OC3/Tripartite), which lie to the north of this area.  The second aim is to more clearly determine what activities took place in this area.

In 1978 a stone resembling a column pad was found in T-22, which lies immediately to the west of T-30.  No mention is made

of this object in the trench book for this area ( SL-I ), but there is a photograph ( p. 100 ) and a drawing ( p. 108 ) of it.

During the clearing of the backfill of T-26 in 2003, which lies immediately to the east of T-30, a large flat stone was noticed.  A measurement was taken between this stone and the one found earlier in T-22.  The distanced measured between the stones suggested to the excavator that both may have been used as column pads ( CED-I, p. 86 ).  However, further stones of similar type and with the appropriate distance measurements would need to be found to confirm the former existence of row(s) of columns.

The opening of T-30 in the same year was due, in part, to see if more evidence for the former existence of such row(s) could be found.  During that season a large flat stone was discovered

in the northwest corner of the T-30 trench excavated, partially imbedded in the balkwall at co-ordinates 180-E/49-S.  It measures 5.4 m. from the stone in T-22 ( AGG/CNT-I, pp. 115 & 117 ).  The measurement is highly suggestive of a row of stone column pads since it is twice the distance of the intercolumniation of the stone column pads found in OC2/Workshop.

The excavation of the area of T-30 labelled "G" (approximate area:  177-180-E/49-52-S) is to determine whether a stone resembling a column pad can be located between these stones.  A row of three such stones with the appropriate measurements would be good evidence for the former existence of an Orientalizing period building here.  Also, it is hoped that the excavation will make clearer what types of activity took place here whether there was a building in this area or not.

II. Datum Point Reference and Dimensions

The point established for measuring vertical depth in the trench is 28.55 m. above the absolute elevation used for the site as a whole.  This point for the trench is referred to as the datum point.

The terracotta recovered from the trench is measured with a bowl with internal dimensions of 24 cm. in diameter and 7 cm. in depth.

Latte box = 1 liter = 10 cm. X 10 cm. X 10 cm.
