Daily Log
Thursday, June 8 Morning
The wall in R9 was completely swept down and cleaned (see BP-MF, bk. I, p.2 ).
Work began in R8 on the unexcavated grids A, C to E 5 (B 5 done previously in 1972, see EN bk. III, p.110 ), showing a burned layer immediately above the wall. The appearance of pottery fragments and small finds was extremely rare; only a handful of fragmetns, mainly impasto, came to light; few tile fragments were also found.
Thursday, June 8 Afternoon
Work continued in R8, where the W wall of the Lower Building was revealed completely and found unbroken (see EN bk. 3, p.1 ). Grid A-5 proved the most interesting, where the top of the wall seemed lower and appeared to incline eastward when compared to the remaining sections of the wall within this rectangle. As previously noted in B-5, a number of pan-tile fragments lay directly on top of the wall, i.e. 1 full box, while very few roof tiles were found elsewhere.
Pottery and other finds were once again extremely scarce.
The brush and grass in grid 5 of Rectangles 7 and 6 were chopped and the area was made ready for excavation.
