After the trees along the northern baulk wall were removed, the area below the stumps were pick axed. Soil mostly consistent with Locus 2 , except for the dark brown humus layer immediately surrounding the roots system. Very littler material being recovered from beneath the roots, including worn terra cotta fragments and worn pottery fragments. There are also many rocks packed within the roots, approximately 10-20cm in length. One stump removed. Picking commenced under the other double stump. Soil consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Pottery and terra cotta found in small concentrations and very worn. During cleaning found a carbonized olive pit.

Locus 2
Also have found two bone fragments, but again most of the material is worn terra cotta and pottery found in small concentrations. Part of the stump in the northern baulk wall removed using the
axe. Soil beneath the removed section pick axed. The area along the northern baulk walls to the west of the stumps pick axed to bring that area down to the level of CA 71 and CA 73 where rocks are being found. Soil consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Again very little material being recovered, mostly small, worn fragments of terra cotta in small concentrations. Fragments of slag also recovered, as well as some vitrified terra cotta. During cleaning, one strap handle fragment recovered.

Locus 2
Also in cleaning carbon recovered among the roots. Many more fragments of pottery being found within the remaining roots system.
PM
Pick axing done around the stump as well as along the northern baulk wall to level it to roughly the same elevation as CA 71 and CA 73. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 and we are past the level around the roots
so there is no longer humus layer mixed in. Several small rocks 3-15cm in length being removed with the soil. Many fragments of pottery, terra cotta, bone, and slag found, with better preservation. A fragment of ridged pottery and possible iron fragment found in the pottery box.

Locus 2
Leveling also done along the baulk wall between CA 70 and CA 72, using hand axes. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, consistent with Locus 2 . Pottery, bone, and slag found. The stump along the northern wall was again axed in half in order to better access the tap root. The stump in being carefully excavated as it seems to overlie rocks which are possibly in a formation stretching from CA 73 and which are present in CA 71. The stump was removed and the soil beneath it sorted and cleaned. Some terra cotta and pottery,
extremely worn, found beneath it. Roots clipped. No end of day elevations taken as all work was in the central two meters today.
Daily Totals:
Locus 2 :
Terra cotta: 1 bowl
Pottery: 183 fragments
Bone: 21 fragments
Slag: 11 fragments
Vitrified terra cotta: 6 fragments
