Trench was strung, and datum was established on a tree 2.6 m from the northeast corner of the trench. Aerial photographs were taken. Locus 1 was declared. It was a dark brown topsoil with a large amount of humus (organic matter).
Opening elevations were taken.
NE: 71 cm BD / 27.26 m AE
NW: 74 cm BD / 27.23 m AE
SE: 80 cm BD / 27.07 m AE
SW: 82 cm BD / 27.05 m AE
Opening photographs were taken. Since there is a tree that will not be cut down, a square baulk roughly 60 x 60 cm will not be excavated this season. Pickpasses began moving east to west across the entire trench. The soil was sorted by hand into buckets, then again
into a wheelbarrow. Terracotta pieces are starting to appear. Roots were clipped and loose dirt was picked up.
