Daily Log

June 17, 2002

Locus 1 was dropped 10cm today in a pickpass throughout the locus. After this cut was completed, the northern baulk wall was trimmed and defined. The terracotta concentration noted on the previous day continues in the northwest corner of the locus as well. Terracotta, however, is now also found south of the rock concentration. By the end of the day three pithos fragments were recovered, six frags of worn pottery, and 1/3 cassette of terracotta.

Locus 2 finished the cut from the previous day and then completed a 10cm cut throughout the locus. Several rocks were removed from the trench and the baulk walls were trimmed. Most of the terracotta was recovered from the northern two meters of the locus, and very little was found in the southern half. This locus produced 1/3 cassette of terracotta and 9 pieces of pottery.

Locus 3 was closed today after the cut from the previous day was completed. Locus 4 was then defined and can be described as a light to medium brown soil with small white particulates throughout. A 5cm cut was completed throughout locus 4 and another cut was started in meters 196E/80S and 197E/80S. A rock concentration has been noticed in the northern two meters of the trench and there is less tile found within this concentration. Locus 3 produced 6 fragments of worn pottery and one latte box of terracotta. Locus 4 produced 1/4 cassette of terracotta and 18 fragments of pottery.
