A topsoil cut of ~15-20 cm was taken in OPQ/71-73. The soil was quite loose, brown with roots and stones. Although numerous fragments of tile, both worn and not, were recovered, as well as some small pieces of plaster, there was little evidence of disintegrated plaster in the soil. A heavy plaster and terracotta layer was visible in the baulk at ~40-60 cm (see AC I and AC II for T-26 1984 -- this area). About one box of pottery was found. Impasto, fineware, and bucchero were included. Among the finds at this level were an impasto rochetto head and a possible statue fragment.
Towards the bottom of this cut (~20 cm), the soil became looser and somewhat lighter in color, probably indicative of proximity to tile and plaster. A piece of slag was found, along with a scattering of carbon flecks in the soil.
P.M.
The topsoil cut was continued and finished. Soil and objects remained about the same, although in somewhat less concentration towards O/71, i.e., former outside of the building.
