DAILY LOG

A.M.

The top layer of the trench was designated locus 1.  Photos were taken and the depths of the four corners were measured (see p. 13).  The soil in the eastern sector is dark brown and contains large amounts of organic material mixed with small stones.  The soil in the western sector is yellowish brown with small stones, forming a slight mound.  This appears to be the remains of an old dirt dump.  Some modern debris (e.g. plastic) was found here.  A pick pass was started.  Two special finds were made this morning in the supposed dirt dump.

Special Finds:

  • Find #1
  • 188.3-E/48.9-S
  • 28.01 m. above abs. elev.
  • Locus 1
  • Impasto stem fragment

P.M.

Pick pass was completed across entire trench.  The area was lowered between approximately 5 and 20 cm., leveling the trench.  Darker soil appeared under the lighter colored soil in the western sector.  The balk walls were trimmed.  Today, approximately 3 bowls of well-worn terracotta fragments were recovered.  Approximately 1/3 latte box of pottery sherds found (mostly impasto).  Approximately 2 1/2 dozen bone and teeth fragments found.  Another special find was made in the supposed dirt dump.

Special Finds:

  • Find #3
  • 188.6-E/49.8-S
  • 27.91 m. above abs. elev.
  • Locus 1
  • Bucchero frag. with diamond pattern
