  • Boxes of Tile: 3
  • Boxes of Pottery: 3

Work continued today on Tesoro Rect. 7 A-F 6 in an attempt to determine the southward extension into Rect. 7 of the mud wall of the lower bldg unconvered in Rect. 6.  The S wall of Rect. 8 was removed as well, though the lower portions of the foundations in maters 1-3 were left for the present.  A test sector in meter 4 was taken to a lower depth - though no materials occurred at the lowest portion of the foundations.  The stone foundation appeared to go deeper towards the 3rd meter though the area was left untested.

Rect. 7 A-F, 6 - there seemed to be a change in the nature of the soil at a depth c. 15 cm. below existing ground line.  This new stratum consisted of darker brown earth with very few stones and a sufficeint quantity of carbonized material to be easily recognized.  The majority of the bucchero came from this stratum.

A new trench was opened - to be designated courtyard and defined on the north by the southernmost wall of the long room (i.e. adjacent to Rect. 5) - The westernmost extension limited by the East Wall of Rect. 7 (thus incorporating Rect. 7 extension X-Y 1,2).  The grid system employed alphabetical coordinates North-South and numerical West-East - thus making the latter consistent with rectangle 5.  For diagram see p.

  • Find #7
  • courtyard, C-0
  • c. 15 cm
  • fragment of thick impasto rocchetto

  • Find #8
  • courtyard, C-0
  • c. 20 cm
  • 2 large bronze nails found 20 cm apart. The earth contained carbon and fragments of large pottery as well as fragments preserving rim of cooking pan

  • Find #9
  • Courtyard, B-0
  • c. 30 cm
  • appears to be the head of a very large nail.  Together with this appeared fragments of iron - the entire piece was held together by a clump of earth and is to be sent to Florence for X-ray
  • On return from Florence a second large nail of iron was found (19720191)

  • find #12
  • courtyard, B-0
  • c. 20 cm
  • large nail, bronze head with iron pin

The sector of the Courtyard B-C, 0-1 was excavated tp a depth c. 35 cm.  In addition to the bronzes noted above there was a heavy concentration of large, coarse ware and some pithos fragments - both pottery and bronzes appeared to be in the same stratum, mixed together - also concentration of carbonized particles.  Very few tile fragments were found.
