CA24- Northern end, grids 40-(65)

Work begun on the northern end of trench CA24, covering grids B-part of I, 40-39+.  This area covers part of the CA 1 south extension trench, a 3m. square trench excavated in 1969 season- see Mary Berg, (book 1) page 63.  (Her 3 meters covered her grids S, T, and parts of R and U, but will be found to coincide fraily closely with CA24 grids E, F, and G, although measurements cannot be precise due to erosion.)  The trench will be worked toward the south, in order to approach the area corresponding to an extension of (E-W) trench in rectangle 13- here, approx. grids 35-34 part of the purpose of this is to obtain a profile from a dike to be left temporarily in this CA24 area; ultimately, all of CA24 will be excavated to bedrock and or galestra.  Trench is taken down from the level left by previous excavation with machinery (see preceding pages.)

Soil excavated consists of an upper area of rough stones and brown soil; below this is slightly finer brown soil bearing most of the artifacts; below this, galestra, however the level of galestra is much

higher on east and west sides (grids B-C and H-I).  Soil in extreme N-E corner was slightly darker brown, and bore and great number of artifacts, and espcially bones in grid B40, this appears to extend into the N-E corner of trench walls.
