Daily Log

July 11, 2003

After measurements, we began by picking Locus 6 .  This revealed more stones in the northern portion, adjacent to Locus 5 .  These stones seem contiguous with the stones in Locus 5 .  They are fairly large, at least as revealed so far, approximately 30 cm across.  They may be spill off the top of the retaining wall.  They continue across the trench as far as 82 S.  An additional stone sits out in front of the pack, reaching to c. 82.20 S.  We will thus expand Locus 5 southward to include these new stones, putting the boundary of the Locus at 82 S, plus the additional stone.  This will be excavated, as before, from the South, attempting to find and articulate the face of the retaining wall.  The speed with which this is carried out, however, must be significantly increased.

Excavation of Locus 6 continued as before.  A lot of earth was moved over the course of the day, but little beside terra cotta and pottery was found.  We did receive notice that the unusual piece of terra cotta found yesterday was in fact half of the lower jaw from a feline water spout.

Pottery Count:  44 total pieces, all from Locus 6 .  36 undiagnostic impasto, 1 ridged impasto, 3 impasto rims, 1 coarse ware handle spring, 1 coarse ware base, 1 undiagnostic orange ware sherd, 1 orange ware ring base sherd.

Also found were a piece of bone and vitrified terra cotta, a carbonized grape seed (= Find #1 ), and a piece of slag (= Find #2 ).
