Daily Log
June 27, 2003
First thing this morning, we took another photo of Locus 5 . We then began our regular routine. Work today is focusing on Locus 4 . After a pick-pass, we pick up the loosened debris and smooth out the area with trowels. By 11:00, the Southern spur had proved once agan particularly productive. We found a bronze tack that may have gold flakes on the head.
The afternoon was spent in much the same way, though significantly less productive. Two pieces of painted pottery - probably medieval - emerged from the trench (=
and ). The overwhelming fatigue of a Friday afternoon, however, reduced the amount of dirt moved.
Pottery Count: 68 total sherds (all from Locus 4 ). 3 undiagnostic bucchero sherds, 6 undiagnostic orange ware sherds, 1 orange ware rim, 52 undiagnostic impasto, 2 impasto rims, 1 coarse ware rim, 1 incised impasto handle fragment (= ), and 2 sherds of medieval painted pottery (= and ).
Also found were a sliver of bone, vitrified terra cotta (=
), a fragment of cut-out akroterion (= ), and a bronze tack with gold on the head (= ).
