A.M.

The cut in I-J 98 was completed to a depth of 70 cm. (Note: the depth of this cut ocmpared to its own balk is approximately 55 cm, but for the purposes of this book depth readings are taken from the north balk [here, F 93-97].) The rocks found yesterday along the western edge at approximately 50 cm. were determined to be random and were removed. Soil in this cut continued to be crumbly yellow near galestra, almost totally

lacking in finds. Less than 1/4 cassetta of worn tile, three pieces of pottery, and a small lump of (possible) bronze were found. The cut was extend north into H98, to bring the meter to current floor level. There appeared no soil change, and several possible slingstones were found at 15 cm; in addition, tile finds increased.

The cut to floor level (70-75 cm.) started yesterday in G95 was completed. Rocks previously noted in the northwest corner of this meter were cleared down by hand and left in place. (Photographs of the area were taken before excavation began.) The soil continued to show clear signs of burning.

An extension of the above cut into F95 revealed the continuation of the same soil type, several pieces of bronze at approximately 50 cm, large numbers of small rocks (left in place, where in concentrations), but less tile than in F-G 96-97 and the disappearance of the band of pottery noted last week in F-G 96-97.

The tile area in F-G 92-95 continued to be cleared by hand. Several tiles of apparent full width were seen, and finds included a posible rocchetto head. Pottery was rare.

P.M.

The continuation of cut to floor level in H98 was completed. Soil became darker brown as the north end of the meter was reached more like topsoil in consistency than the near-galestra in the south. Rocks along the west side (which had been the end of the rock formation in H-I 96-97- see pp. 48-49 , 65 , 71 , 77 ) and in the balk directly east of these were left in place, to determine their relevence and importance, if any. A small amount of pottery and 1/2 cassetta of tile were recovered.

F-G 95 was taken to floor level, using hand tools to clear aroundt he small rocks left in place. Several pieces of pottery and tile were found.

The tile fal in G 94-95 continued to be cleared by hand. "Floating" pieces of tile were removed and reserved for possible joins. Several pieces of pottery were recovered.

The northeast side of the stump in H 91-92 was cleared, revealing an apparent ful width of pan tile (preserving notch for fitting into another tile) and a possible full width conver tile.
