Weekly Report

A hot week.

Worked mainly in D-F 4-5.

Most of this area is covered, in B level, by stones of small, middle, and (some few of) bigger size.  Their extension and appearance at level ca. [no information given] can be seen at plan and pictures p. 116 .  In esp. grid 4, they appear next to Big Stone Line in a heavily burnt stratum which also covered these foundation stones.

At level, they were all left out.  It turned out difficult to establish a floor level on which this rubble fell; of p. 125 though.  The stratification in the area described p. sotto.

In D4 no continuation eastwards of Big Stone Line was found.

In D 4/5 appeared at dug surface what seems to be the southern part of a circular (?) hollow in the soil (depth still unknown) with a fill of clay-plaster.  It extends into C 4/5 northwards.  Work barely started taking C 4-5 down to same dug level which should be done before this remarkable feature is explored further.

Removed the rest of the dike in E-F (N half): cf. p. 73 .  A distinct destruction stratum low down in B level.  Big quantity of tiles (obs spec. covertiles, in all probability of 80 cm length), pottery and, not least, bones.  To be connected with Big Stone Wall: cf. p. 115 , p. 133 .

An important result of this week's work was that stones of rather big size in (G-)H 2 were definitely found to connect with Big Stone Wall: see esp. the bonding stone visible on picture p. 100 .  This brings up the crucial question of the relation between this new crosswall and (earlier disclosed) foundation walls on a low level belonging to Pithos Unit in the immediate vicinity.
