Area C 4-5
Continued taking down C 4-5 to the level where the hollow containing clay plaster appears on dug surface: cf. above p. 131.
Today first removed red burnt stratum (B level) which appears as a pink-red band in profile C/D. This red is also clearly seen in profile 5/6 and also might be in connection with pietrische in profile 3/4 (from E). It does not keep an even level, and is not distinct everywhere.
Below this, the stratification in C 4-5 is not uniform: in 5, mainly, B continues downwards as a burnt stratum, less red; clayey character, no pietrische at same mirelles as in D5 (p. 125). We seem to strike a still more clayey surface, with carbon on top of it; digging stops here.
- Find #2
- C5
- B, in level below level of pietrische in C4
- Spindle whorl, impasto
In C4, on the other hand, below red burnt stratum is found a gray-yellowish layer, rich in carbon speckles. This is clearly seen in profile D/C as also in N-S profile 3/4 (from E).
This perhaps more pavement character than red layer just above it?? Who knows. Level ca. - 67.5
Below that in same grid (C4) and W-most part of C5 is a layer of pietrische; level -69; certainly same pietrische stratum as that occurred in D-F 4 (mainly) earlier: see p. 116 .
These stones were lifted.
Late in the afternoon, pictures were taken of C-D 4-5 with extension of hollow showing up rather well on dug surface: circle of heavily burnt soil.
The northern limit of the hollow has to be probed further, though, it is not quite clear.
In N part of \'hollow area\' are still some pietre prob. belonging to the stratum of pietre extending over grids C-F 4 (mainly)-5. See plan p. 116 . This stratum covered also the area of the hollow: important.
