Daily Log

of the trench facing the tile in N 88

Thursday, 18 July, morning

We extend the 15-75 cm. cut eastward and northward in L-N 89-90 and continue to expose the floor in O-P 88-89 and in Q 90.  The yellow soil over the floor gives way in the south and east of O 89 and continues to the south and east, but mixes in O-P 90 with yellow.  In Q 90 where the floor levels off after rising toward the south, the soil is again dark black.  The yellow material yields very little, including, however, the missiles No. 1-3.  The top of the yellow and bottom of the brown soil above it produces a great deal of plaster, as does the black soil where it is sometimes burned (or at least blackened).  Here it occurs above, arount the top of the layer.  Plaster fills a cassetta.  Tile does not and occurs at the top of the cut over the plaster.  The floor itself rises steadily toward the east, and on it one finds numerous flat pieces of terracotta collecte in a latte box.  We also find a latte box of pottery.  In L-N 89 90 we reach the floor, whose yellow coating is replaced in L 90 by a deeper mass of pink plaster.  Intense tile concentration almost reaches the floor (3 cassette full of tile, .33 plaster).  The area also yields .5 latte box of pottery.  The pan tile in N 88 is faced for lifting.

Some observations on the pan tile and column base in N-O 88.  The tile fell upon an oblique section of the floor and its breakage seems to reflect that.  Its northeastern corner may actually touch the pavement, but the rest of the northern (front) edge rises as much as 1.5 cm. from it and 1-5 cm. fromt the slanting floor along the western (right) edge.  The floor rises to the tile's south to overtop the column base by as many as 7 cm.  At the southeastern edge of teh base a curve, finished surface might even suggest the shape and size of the column.  A photo is taken.  We continue to pursue the floor in O-P 90, N 90, reaching the east face of the trench and around the stump in N 88-89, and expose additional floor digging northward in L 89-90.  In the yellow soil we note a ball and cylinder of brown soil and we save both brown positives and yellow negatives.  In 89 N a large lump of unfired clay resting on the floor is bagged.  In L 89-90 the yellow layer gives way to a red plaster deposit over which the brown plaster soil continues as always.  In the northeast corner of the trench, in north central L 90, a portion of a new column base emerges, and near the north end in 89-90 a female antefix is found extending well into the baulk on the red plaster but in the brown plaster soil.  We remove the severed head but leave the tile, P.V.A. ed and reburied.  We remove the pan tile and the yellow soil under it.  Inspection of the underside will reveal whether it touched the floor or not.  (find No. 3) see supra p. 232.  Note: (22.VII.85) the left front corner has 4-6 cm. of yellow soil adhering to its underside.
