Box 7: Pelvis

Attempt to remove pelvis from soil (very fragile with thin layers) using a technique used to remove frescos from walls. The goal is to get it out of the ground and maintain its shape. This is also an exercise to prepare for working on the skull in case it is filled with eart hand would collapse upon removal.

PVA solution - molecular wt AYAFr 275 gm 25% alcohol --> this is soluble in alcohol.

  1. Cut gauze into small squares and place over bone.
  2. Brush/drip PVA onto gauze to hold it to the bone. Photographed when half covered with gauze (by Chris).
  3. Add a double layer of paper towels for strength.
  4. Let dry.

Lisa assisting.

Box 3 Bone 1 - piecing together.

Box 5 - while sifting the earth by hand found tiny "beadlike" or "seedlike" lumps of unknown material. Bagged with enclosed label.

Box 7:

  1. Bagged misc. tiny fragments with label enclosed
  2. Bones 2, 3, 4, and misc. bones - brushed reverse side with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.)

Box 3 Bone 2: glued 2 fragments.

Note: from this point on, the glue to be used is UHO. L'attaccatutto pu lito, extra onon for file - non sporca. Beocliam Italia - Mildano infiamniabile, tassico.

Box 1 Bone 2: Glued a join found yesterday.

Box 7 Bone 1:

  1. Removed earth from around the bone.
  2. The "bone" is apparently 2 bones side by side to be known as bones 1A and 1B. Suggests ulna and radius.
  3. Had to brush sections of the bones (which had been covered with earth and were fragile) with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). Let dry.

Box 6:

  1. Removal of dirt from Bones 1 and 2.
  2. Bone 2 was successfully cleaned. I treated underside with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.)
  3. Bone 1: had to treat a weak section again with PVA emulsion.

Box 7 - Breaking the block of earth

  1. Cut off the block with pelvis (which had the gauze-PVA treatment). Let sit overnight.
  2. Turned it over holding it to remove the underside layer with sculptor's knife. Going against the grain (galestra soil). Note: found small little white "things" as previously noticed by Lisa in Box 5.
  3. Uncovered opposite side of pelvis - cleared out the dirt.
  4. Painted the bone with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) and left to dry.
