AM

A pick pass was made in the southern half of the trench. While sorting soil, a piece of burnt plaster was discovered in the northwestern quadrant. It is going to be included with the end of day totals and will be discarded with the tile.

While picking the northern half of the trench, we began to see a more yellow-ish, gray soil that is very sandy and loose.

Due to the slope, we haven’t begun to see this soil change in the southern region of the trench. For this reason, a pick pass will be performed with emphasis on the southern region of the trench in areas where the more clay-like soil is still visible.

Special find #34: Antefix fragment; gorgon hair

27.37 m.AE

46.49 S / 169.49 E

A piece of an antefix was discovered in the northwestern quadrant of the trench, preserving two worked sides and displaying two tendrils of a gorgon’s hair.

The sandy yellow-ish brown soil is beginning to appear throughout the entirety of the trench.

Baulk walls were cleaned, any found material will be categorized as baulk trim.

Roots were trimmed and loose material was scraped off the surface in preparation for locus 4 closing photos / locus 5 opening photos.

A first pick pass was made in locus 5.

Locus 5: A yellowish-gray soil with a dry, sandy consistency. Dirt clumps are extremely hard to break up by hand and feels compact. Sporadic, tiny pieces of charcoal are being discovered. It does not seem as though there are a lot of rocks and little material is emerging.

A pick pass was made in the northern half of the trench.

While sorting through dirt by the northern baulk in the northeastern corner, parts of a lateral sima were discovered, having been broken by the pick axe. Three of the pieces join together, preserving the forehead and parts of the hair on the right side. A fourth, non-conjoining piece was also discovered preserving part of the hairline. All other potential affiliated pieces will be sent to conservation.
